Meet the Team
Dr. Mark Schultzel
Dr. Mark Schultzel is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with fellowship training in shoulder and elbow surgery. He trained at the prestigious Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic under mentor, Dr. John Itamura, and is a respected expert in injuries of the shoulder and elbow. His focuses of practice are shoulder and elbow sports medicine (labral tears, rotator cuff tears, Tommy John injuries), shoulder and elbow arthroplasty (joint reconstruction/replacement), and fracture care.
Dr. Schultzel completed undergraduate, medical school, and business school at UC San Diego, with orthopaedic surgery residency training in Kansas City. He has experience with sports medicine coverage at an elite level, as a team physician for the US Olympic Team, San Diego Legion Professional Rugby Team, as well as for the Los Angeles Sparks and Loyola Marymount Athletics. He currently is a team physician for the USA Kendo Team and for the United States Olympic Committee. Dr. Schultzel is the Division Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at United Medical Doctors and Chair of the Sharp Community Medical Group Orthopaedic Surgery Department.
Dr. Schultzel also has an identical twin brother, Matthew, who specializes in colorectal and robotic general surgery.
He is also committed to training the next generation of physicians: he provides mentorship to numerous college students, medical students, and residents, fellows, and young surgeons. He is a volunteer Associate Professor for the UCSD School of Medicine Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, and Adjunct Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery for Touro University School of Medicine (CA and NV) and Rocky Mountain University.

Dr. Schultzel is heavily involved in leadership in Orthopaedic Surgery:
AAOS: In the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery (AAOS), he serves as Chair of the Shoulder and Elbow Examinations Committee, as a Crew Chief for the AAOS Launchpad, and as a member of the Impact and Opportunity Committee. He is ALI Level 3 certified and is a member of the Emerging Leaders program.
ASES: In the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES), he serves on the Impact and Opportunity Committee, is the co-Chair of the Political Action Committee (PAC), and serves as a mentor for the ASES Mentorship Program. He has completed the J3P Leadership Training Program.
AOA: In the American Orthopaedic Association Honor/Leadership Society (AOA), he serves on the Social Media Advisory Council and was named a member of the Emerging Leaders Program.
Sharp Healthcare: with Sharp Healthcare, he is an elected member to the Orthopaedic Surgical Supervisory Committee at Sharp Memorial Hospital, sits on the Surgical Steering Committee, and is the Chair of the Epic Surgeons Work Group. He is also a member of the Sharp Health Ventures Board. With Sharp Community Medical Group, he is Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Orthopaedic Specialty Advisory Council, and sits on the Quality of Care/Utilization Management and Performance Committees.
Staff
Paul Rogers, PA-C
Paul Rogers is a board certified Physician Assistant who graduated from a Physician Assistant program in 2008 from Riverside Community College and has since completed Emergency Medicine and Orthopedics fellowships. He completed a Bachelor’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies and additionally a Master’s Degree in Organizational Leadership.
Rogers has over 15 years experience combined in Emergency Medicine as well as Orthopedic Surgery. Additionally, he has served for over 30 years in the military and is currently a Major in the California Air National Guard. He provides lectures at several local Physician Assistant programs and gives back to his community by mentoring at local high schools and junior high schools, promoting health and fitness.
He is also dedicated to community development through continuing to provide educational opportunities for PA and pre-PA students in our practice.
Angelique Diaz, PA-C
Angelique Diaz is a board-certified Physician Assistant. She earned her Master of Physician Assistant Studies from Samuel Merritt University in Oakland, CA in 2022.
Before joining the orthopedic team, Angelique spent three years practicing in Emergency Medicine and Urgent Care setting. Her diverse clinical background has given her a strong foundation in evaluating and treating musculoskeletal conditions while emphasizing clear communication and individualized care. Angelique values partnering with her patients to develop treatment plans that align with their goals and support a successful recovery.
Angelique is also passionate about medical education and enjoys mentoring and precepting physician assistant students as they develop their clinical skills.
